    The greatest of our local heroes was Sergeant Custume. His name is celebrated in song and story for his heroic deed during the first siege of Athlone. The English army was passing on towards the Shannon and victory was in their grasp when Custume suddenly realised that the day was won for Athlone if the bridge could be broken down.
