The Athlone January fair was one of the biggest in Ireland, especially the horse fair. There were about two thousand soldiers in the Barracks, so that army horses were bought for the Huzzars and Dragoons. The fairs were held on the streets and in the market place which was from the Railway Station to the Convent of St. Peter's.
Fair day was also market day, the the Cobblers, tinkers and blacksmiths were busy.
The meat market, in which dead pigs were bought, stretched from O'Farrell's to Finnerty's (then Tom Geraghty's). There was a toll paid on cattle. "The luck penny" was(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
