    debt themselves. Eventually they lost their own house, their estate and lands. The Land Commissioners then took over the estate, and the tenants are now paying rent to the Land Commission. The house is now occupied by a family named the Kings and none of the Pilkington family ever visits the locality.
    Lord Kilmaine, who owned a big house and large estate in Gaulstown and surrounding townlands, was another old Landlord. He seldom resided at Gaulstown and was known as the absentee landlord. His estate was managed and rents collected by agents who also lived away from the locality. Little was known about the landlord himself, but the agents were very (bad) hard on the tenants, and used to press hard for payment of rent. Eventually times became very bad and some tenants became so poor that they were unable to pay rent. The agent would not allow this and a good many of the poor tenants were evicted from their homes. After a while all the tenants rose up in agitation with the result that the strong agitation meant a strong fight and forced the Landlord to sell to the Land Commission. Having
