    The one I am going to tell you about is the one in Oldtown. Biddy Picket was the teacher and she was very good. My granfather went to her. She lived beside the school. The people called it the hedge school. It was a little thatched house and eleven or twelve boys used to fit in it. The way they paid her was with a bag of potatoes now and again. She was a small woman.
    she taught every subject except Irish. the boys had to stand on chips and planks and she used to beat them with her apron.
    They had four or five books between them all in the school. They used to write
