    both of them used to work a lot together. One day they were called into their dinner by the farmer's wife who was fairly stingy and used to supply them with plenty of vegetables but very little meat. John was a few minutes before his fellow-workman and being hungry he made no delay in starting his dinner. The woman entered almost immediately and seeing that he was alone she said "Where's your mate John"? He rather slow of apprehension replied "I ate it (meat).
