In the parish of Newcastle, Mullagh, Kells there is a field called the Dan Clogher.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
large family was so stricken with the famine that he and his family had to fly to America.
A neighbour named Paddy Lynch (Para Beg) knowing the hard plight of the Cahills went to Dan to ask his daughter's hand. This daughter Judy was a very fine girl and she was the only Cahill to remain. Near to the Dan Clogher on the Moynalty side is a shop built on the site of one of the "Relief" stations. Here porridge was distributed to the needy.
The Judy Cahill who married Para Beg became the mother of a son (Larry) and considered that Para owed her something for presenting him with an heir. But when she mentioned it Para told her he would go up to the Boiler for a mug of the Relief porridge. In other words telling her she should be thankful that she had her fill.
Near Dan Cahill's house lived a man Conor Sheridan. Conor had to go to America at the famine time. Conors son afterwards became captain of New York Fire Brigade.
