- In the schools long ago the teachers used to teach the children out in the open. When the Penal Laws were in force they had hedge schools. They all had the one book for each class. There were very few inspectors long ago. They only went to the schools once in every two years. Never doctors or guards went into any of those schools. One could stay at home any time one liked. Half of the children would play truant and stay out in the open air till school hours were over. There was no compulsory age for going to school then. The boys wore dressed until they were fourteen. They taught no Irish in the schools long ago.
