who got it from her mother: People of the name Madden lived on the lane which leads doen to Ardmulchan graveyard on the left-hand-side as you go down. One morning when the sun [was] shining on the table a young cock got up on the leg of the table and crew three times in succession. Old Madden was a superstitious man and he thought it was bad luck, and he left the place.
A Mr. Hickey was the man to live in it and when he heard the story about the cock he said he would explore it. He started digging and when he was down about twelve feet he came upon two big pots of gold. He went off to Dublin to get the boat to America, and while he was waiting for it he was talking to a friend he put his hand in his pocket and took out a "fistful" of gold and said, "Look at what Old Madden was afraid of".
