  1. Long ago when a man wanted a wife he would take another man with him to a house where he knew there was a good girl with a big fortune whom he wished to make his wife. They would bring with them a bottle of whiskey. The man who went along was called "The Bouthers" and he had to discuss the fortune and talk for him. The people in the house might be in the know, and would have a chicken boiling in a pot beside the fire, or perhaps the pan would be covered with bacon and eggs hanging over the fire.
If the parents thought well of these people, they would welcome them in and there and then discuss the fortune. The talkm and the eating and the drinking would go on till morning. If the marriage were settled that night, the half of the fortune would be paid down so as to enable the young man to put everything in order for the marriage.
