- There are several men around this district who followed the trade of thatching. Some of them still keep up the trade. Long ago all the houses were thatched. There are still a few thatched houses throughout the country. The thatcher earned a greater wage than any working man. They sometimes earned four shillings per day when the ordinary man got only one shilling, or one and sixpence for a days work. The names of the thatcher who are living are Owen Dooley, John Carroll and Christy Farrrell.
