- Mumming is a very old custom in this part of the country. It is supposed to be an English custom kept by the inhabitants of the Pale.
In the month of November when all the work is done a band of boys dress in queer clothes and paint their faces so that they would not be known, then they go about from house to house mumming.
When they come to a house, they sing songs say rhymes and play music, the man of the house gives them some money then they go to an other house. On Saint Stephens Night they have a mummers dance.
