Fetherna is the name used for the district around this school.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
On account of the rocks and bogs and shrubbery on both sides of the road the judge was usually ambushed at this place, i.e. from Mrs Mc Ardle's (public-house) to Clonalig school.
A high point of rock in front of Mr. John Byrne's house used to be known as Cairrig an Amhairc where the ambushers used to stand to see if the judge was coming.
On the opposite side of the road in Mr. Mc Gill's field is a rock called Cairrig na Seabhach (shoke). Fetherna Bush is a well-known lone bush on the side of the road opposite Edward's Meegan's gate and portions of it used to be taken to America by boys and girls there to find work. During visits home from America they used to drive nails into this bush and hang pieces of cloth on the branches.
An ambush occurred near the Casadh Cam and the judge and escort fled through the bogs and swamps towards the Fanc. The ambushers forced judge and escort into a deep swamp at Sheepwalk where they were either killed or drowned. The swamp is called Loch na nGearán on account of the number of horses drowned.
