In the year 1846 there was a great famine in Ireland.
It spread rapidly, and very soon a great part of the crops became unfit for human use. Dan O Connell liberator of Ireland urged the government to prevent the exportain of corn to other countries. He also wanted to stop distilling and brewing in our own country and instead to have the g food provisions received from other countries.
In the middle of September 1846 the potato blight appeared for the first time in Ireland.
It started with little black specks on the leaves and gradually the whole stalk withered away.
The country was thickly populated before the famine but by the end of it there were nearly half of them died from fever and other diseases.
It was reckoned that the population lessened by 2 1/2 millions(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
