Nearly all the houses in this locality are thatched, and the farmers thatch them themselves.

Nearly all of the houses in this locality are thatched, and the farmers that them themselves.
There are two kinds of thatch, common-thatch and sew-thatch.
There is one man in this locality who is a noted sew thatcher. His name is Lot Doolin. He says that scollops cut from a bog-deal stick are the best, because it is easier twist them, and they don't rot quickly. Sew-thatch looks by far tidier than common-thatch the scollops are hardly noticeable, therefore it looks very even and tidy.
