    About one hundred years ago the farmers around here used to sow a lot of wheat.
    They had not any threshing machine to thresh the corn, but they used to scutch it and this is how it was done. A ladder was placed on two boxes at one end of the barn and the wheat at the other end. There was a big smooth stone left on the ladder and the sheaf of wheat was hit hard against the stone and all the seed was knocked out of the straw. The reason the ladder was used was to let the wheat drop on the barn floor. A good man would scutch
