  1. There are two forges in our parish. They are owned by Mr. Guilfoyle and Mr. Heenan. Their people have been smiths for many years. Both forges are situated in the country, on the roadside and at a cross-roads. The cross takes its name from the owners of the forge. It is a dark little place with a canvas roof. There is only one fireplace. For special kinds of work he uses -- a hammer, a file, a sledge, a vice and other tools. He shoes asses and horses but he does not shoe cattle. He makes S hooks, tongs, and pot hooks. Some of the work is done in the open-air.
It is said that if a bottle of water is stole from the force it will cure chilblains.
