- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)are now very rare. Thatch was usually got from wheat straw. When cut it was bound into sheaves or bundles and switched on a barrel to shake the seed off. It was then cleaned free from weeds and was then ready for the thatcher. Then it was fastened on to the old thatch by means of scallops which are made of small twigs called sallies cut into short rods of about two feet long and bent into the middle in two places.
