In many houses long ago there was only a kitchen & room 'below the fire'.
The chimney place separated these two apartments.
As conditions grew better on the farms people began to make additions to their houses.
There was a strong belief that it was very wrong to build an addition to the room below the fire even when it was more suitable to put on the addition in this way.
The new part was generally put on at the kitchen end.
There were many tales told of misfortune which followed a neglect of this precaution. Deaths occurred in the family, rows occurred etc.
I myself knew people who had not made an addition which was much needed because the kitchen end abutted on the public road.
In another case an addition was made at right angles to the kitchen rather than break this ancient rule.- Bailitheoir
