Hares besides being coursed were looked upon as rather uncanny at times. Witches or those concerned with the taking away of milk were sometimes supposed to take the shape of a hare.
It was considered very unlucky for an expectant mother to meet a hare when walking.
I was told by an old person that one day when two married sisters were out for a walk near this place they met a hare running in their direction on the path.
One was so terrified that she fainted but the other laughed at her sister's superstition.
When their children were born it was seen that the child of her who laughed had a 'hare' lip while that of the other was without blemish.
The old man was explaining to me why a certain person had a 'hare' lip.
We happened to be referring to this person whom I knew well.
