Bill Linane was a working man, and at the time this took place, he was working for people who lived in this district.
One day the farmer told him to take one of the new gates he had got made to one of the fields.
This field had not any gate, the opening being filled with bushes to keep the cattle in.
Off went Bill with the gate, and whatever fumbling he had in trying to hang it on the hinges it fell into a deep dyke and got stuck deep in the mud. When he found he could not pull it out he went back to the house.
When the farmer saw him he asked, "Did you hang that gate?" Bill's reply was, "No I did not hang it, I drowned it instead".
