- MatchmakingMatchmaking is a very ancient custom in Ireland and it is still carried out chiefly among the farmers in Effin.When a farmer has a son or daughter to be married he sends an account of a match to another farmer who has a marriageable son or daughter.Fhe first farmer has a fortune of a few hundred pounds to give his daughter. He comes on a certain day and brings another man with him to see the place which he intends for his daugther. He usually dresses in his best walks the farm and examines all the cows and animals.He takes scarecely any notice of the man whom his daughter will marry. If the means are satisactory the match is made.
