  1. In August 1920 a very sad happening occurred in the vicinity of Foynes. Michael Woulfe, and Ned Walsh both natives of Barracks, Foynes had got a job in Clare cutting timber. They stayed in Clare during the week, and generally returned home to spend the week end with their families. Michael Woulfe had an aged father and mother, who were the last people in this district to speak the native tongue. We can imagine how they depended on their son, and how they welcomed him on his return from Clare.
    Ned Walsh was married and had a wife and two children to support.
    On Sunday afternoon August 16th, they got ready their boat to start on their journey to Clare. Even on this August day it was very wild, and a storm was raging. Many thought it would be wiser not to attempt the journey. With their usual manliness
