  1. There was a robber long long ago, who lived in Aughanish known as the Pounder. He used to kill anyone who had money. One day there was a great storm blowing and ship that was passing down the Shannon came in along the shore of Aughanish for shelter. The Pounder saw the ship coming and he went to rob it. It is believed that the Captain of the ship knew him and when he saw him coming towards him, the thought he was only coming to visit them, but when he drew near to the ship he blew it up, only the captain escapted and when the Pounder was going away the captain said "Ah, I thought you would not do that to us," But as he was speaking the Punder turned on him and he killed the Captain.
    On another occasion he pretended to be a poor sick man, and the pirest came to anoint him, and as the priest was coming in he said to him "Lock the door," The priest
