One of Cromwell's officers was given Caneysville as a reward for his services, in his work of pillaging the country.

One of Cromwell's officers was given Caneysville as a reward for his services, in his work of pillaging the country. he set out from Fermoy to take possession of it and at Bellevue he met a man named Caney. He asked Cany the distance to Careyville and he answered - "You're as far (as you) from it now as you were in th morning" Carey then made a bargain with him. The bargain was the horse + £100 in exchange for his title, deeds etc. to Caresville. The Cromwellian soldier returned and Carey took possession of his new estate. He was subsequently done out of this place by the Montgomerys who were still in possession.
