  1. There was an old custom on St John's Eve of lighting bon fires.
    These fires were considered good for men and beasts.
    On that night all the neighbours used gather together and get sticks and furbushes and make a very big fire.
    Anybody who was able used jump it.
    A weed called Bugoord was used in this way.
    The people gathered the weed and made the Sign of the Cross over the fire.
    This was put away and used as a cure for the cattle for the year.
    When the fire was nearly burned out every neighbour took a share of what was left.
    He took this home with him.
    He put it in the gap and drove the cows over it and this was
