There was a hedge school at Bawnmore Cross in the parish of Kanturk, County Cork about one hundred and thirty years ago. It is said that this district was very thickly populated at that time, and it was convenient for a master to teach there, as there was a good attendance, and he was paid according to what the people could afford.
This school was held in an unoccupied house. The pupils wrote on slate with slate pencils (cudgels) which they got off the heap of stones on the roadside; because there were no lead pencils or pens there at that time. A man of the name of Cremin taught the scholars and it was said he was a native of Kerry.
    Willie Bourke,
