- The old people used to believe a lot in hanging home made crosses in some part of the house, or in the cow houses or stables, to bring luck to all residents therein. They used to make crosses of Elder by removing the bark of a couple of pieces, then about one foot or nice inches in length. Then they held the to fire to toughen them. They then fixed them to form a cross and bound the pieces together. The cross was hung in a quiet corner of the house and kept out of the way until St. Brigids day or St. Patricks day. Then it was hung in a more conspicuous place for that day and sprinkled with holy water in honour of the Saint.
The water taken from a holy well such as Kilmacow, Dromtariff, Tullylease and other holy wells was, and still is, kept and used in case of sickness of either person or beast. A piece of the stone taken from " Bens(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
