  1. In the middle of the seventeenth century Cromwell ravaged Ireland. He did not forget Blarney. When Mc Carthy's messengers brought the dread news a sudden thought of how he would deprive the English of his valuable jewels and gold came to his mind. He ordered his best horses to be harnessed to a great carriage and brought in front of the castle. Soon this was done and the precious treasures of the clan were piled into the spacious vehicle. No time was to be lost, soldiers were fast approaching from the south - east. The furious steeds were sent prancing into an underground passage which opened into the bottom of the lake, and amid the rattle of wheels and the clink of chains Mc Carthy's dearest treasures were lost forever in the lake which legends say has no bottom.
