- Before slate houses were established people lived in thatched houses. These thatched houses were common in this district in former times. They used wheaten straw and they mixed that with clay to make the thatch.They also used the covering of animals such as the hides and hairs. There was always an edging stone around the doors and around the windows. They made the floors with the yellow clay. The clay had to be dried before it was put on the ground and it was never unhealthy or it never gave a cold to anyone.Sometimes the people spread clean sand on the floor and they had the fire in the centre of the floor. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen and by night it was used as a bed but by(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
