- Years ago there was a pair of quern-stones in nearly every farmhouse in this district. These stones were circular in shape, and they were made out of very hard stone. Each stone was about two inches in thickness and about eighteen inches in diameter. In the centre of the bottom stone a hole was bored into which a round piece of wood about six inches long was driven lightly. In the centre of the top stone there was a hole which was larger than the hole in the bottom stone. A wooden handle was also fixed in the top stone.
When wheat was to be ground the bottom stone was laid on a clean sheet, and the top stone was laid on top of this, the piece of wood in the former going through the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
