When a new site for a house has been chosen the 4 corners are marked by 4 Hazel rods.
If after 3 nights the rods are still in position, the site is finally approved but if they have been disarranged, then the site to condemne'd, as a superstition prevails, that in such a case, the site intrudes on an old Fort, Graveyard, or playground of the fairies.
In this connection the West Cork people are very loth to burn the wood of the following trees:- Hazel, alder, sloe, and mistletoe.
