- Once upon a time there lived in Ireland a wealthy man named Sutton. Sutton kept a fine hound, a famous dog. Master and dog loved each other very much. One day Sutton was out riding, and when he reached his castle he was met at the door by the hound. He was shocked to see that the dog had blood upon his nose and paws.
Nowhere could Sutton's baby boy be seen but the cot lay tumbled in the room with blood all over the linen. Sutton thought the hound must have killed and eaten the child. In his wild anger he drew his sword and struck the animal a deadly blow. The dog died, and as he did he looked on his master with a look of wonder.
