- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Well the tinkers then as now were a pest to the people. Meeting in great numbers and camping on the road-side with their asses and jennets, mules and broken down horses which they allowed to roam at large and trespass on the farmers. They became intolerable and the local people petitioned the then ruling authority for protection and to have the tinkers moved off the road-side.
The people were granted the protection they sought and the tinkers had no place to camp so they held a meeting and as Carrick-na-gat was waste ground so they decided to gather all their forces and clear out the cats. The fight began and continued day after day and was a most bloody battle. The cats were determined to remain in their old haunts and the tinkers equally determined on their slaughter and banishment.
Finally after several days of incessant slaughter the tinkers triumphed any of the cattle that escaped made for the ox mountains and left the tinkers in undisputed possession of the place which they cleared of whin and shrub and were free from being hunted by the guardians of the law.
