With the fall of the old church, the school went too, or rather, was transferred to two newly- obtained houses on the side of the street, in the present farm-yard of the convent. Here the sisters continued to teach the poor of the parish until the present N. School was built in 1887 and opened on the 18th of June, 1888 by Very Rev. Edward Brennan P. P. It was improved and enlarged by the present P. P Very Rev. A Fenelon, in 1935.
Orangeism was rife in this district in the early 19th century. The Orangemen attacked Father Dwane, Adm. in 1808 who was forced to seek safety under a bridge at Lesley’s Corner (bridge over Race which turned Richard Neill’s Mill). Later, he sought shelter at Bray’s hotel (present bulles). Here he was refused admittance, through fear of the Orangemen, but fortunately secured hospitality at Mr. Martin Dunne’s (saddleir) at the opposite side of the street.
