John Keegan in summer 1832 went on pilgrimage from Gurtnacle (his native district) with a number of his neighbours to St John's well near Kilkenny - a journey of over twenty miles. Being then only a boy in his teen, he was much interested in the "dark people" cripples etc who attended there that day with the hope of being cured. Among others was an aged woman with her fine young daughter both dressed with a shawl and bonnet. The girl, tall and well-built, was(continues on next page)
