The used to make the bread from turnips and potatoes, and oatmeal, and sometimes peas and beans. Sometimes the bread that was made from beans there would be cobwebs on it.
They used to wet the bread with flummery. This was a kind of stuff like water. They used to get oats ground at the milll, and they got the shells of the oats and bring it home and put it in a crock to steep in cold water. They would leave it there for about three days until it would be sour. Then they would drink it, and use it with stirabout, and wet cakes with it. They used to bake about seven cakes on one day of the week and put them up on a shelf over the fire. They used to bake the cakes standing up by the fire leaning against two sods of turf. Someties the used to bake the bread on a griddle.
