- Some years ago we had a heavy snowfall in Ireland; the storm lasted about three days. The snow was about twenty feet deep in some places; there was a heavy frost after that and the snow remained on the ground for two months. At that time the doors of the cow-house were made of sally rods and the snow blew in through them so that the cows were nearly smothered; it even entered the dwelling houses for they were not as well finished off then as they are now-a-days.Nearly all the sheep were smothered except those that made their way into caves, they ate(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
