- Long ago people were hardier than they are at present. They also had to walk much longer journeys as there were not many quick methods of travelling. Whether it was thought that the person was less tired at the end of the journey after walking barefoot or not is hard to say, but it was quite common to walk perhaps twenty or thirty miles to a fair and back again in one day and to do this barefoot. Then on reaching the outskirts of the town the "boots" were put on until the return journey was commenced in the evening.
