About a week before a couple was married married they used run away to a neighbour's house (about half a mile or so from their native homes). When the neighbours this, they all gathered together and came to this house, each bringing with him a bottle of whiskey. The Bride and Groom usually stood, one on either side of the entrance to the house, the Groom holding a five-naggin bottle of whiskey, out of which every person got a drink, as he passed into the house. Then all had partaken of the drink, the Groom smashed the bottle on a stone, spilling the remaining contents. All then went into the house, and danced and sang until morning. Each guest took his own(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
