The roof tree, which was laid from one gable to the other, was the most important piece of timber, and was usually carfully selected. This was fixed on the summit of each gable, and the other pieces of bog oak laid down the sides of the roof. Large tough scraws, or thin sods, were then placed in position and made secure by way of sewing the scraws to the timber with ropes made of straw.
