Oaten bread was generally used. It was made by mixing a pinch of salt and water with the oaten meal. They cut it into four bonnachs and put each bonnach lying on the tongs over a great fire of turf.
Watercress used to be eaten with some salt. Boxty and champ were eaten at Halloweve.
The spoons were left in the champ. If these spoons were moved it was a sign that one of the house would be dead before next Halloweve. Ashes were put round the pot. If a track was found going to the pot, it was a sign that there would be a birth or if it was going out it was a death.
