- Marriages most frequently take place during Shrove, that is from Christmas to Ash-Wednesday :
Most people prefer getting married on Mondays or Thursdays as they count them lucky days. May is said to be an unlucky month for people to get married, I dont know of any customs or beliefs connected with Shrove. Matches are sometimes made in my district, and money is given as a dowry to the girl. One of the customs on the wedding day is to throw rice after the wedding couple. The wedding feast is usually held in the bride's home and during the wedding night "straw-boys" sometimes come; they wear suits made of straw and straw hats. They come in and dance with the bride; when they have danced they are offered refreshments which they sometimes take, and then give a cheer for the bride and groom, and then depart quietly. Another of the customs was to have a procession of horses and cars to the Church, and on their way back they would take a long rout for a drive.- Bailitheoir
