- The Local Forge
There are two forges in my parish, one is in the village of Carney and the other in the village of Cashelgarron. The smith in Carney is Pat Carty and in Cashelgarron is Charles Haran who has an assistant called Jim Waters. Cashelgarron forge is situated near a cross-roads and Carney forge is situated on the village street.
Carney forge has a thatched roof and Cashelgarron forge has a galvanized roof. There is one hearth fire in each forge. The bellows were brought and they are situated at the back of the fire-place. The implements that the smiths use are an anvil, a vice, a pair of long tongs, a knife, a file, and different kinds of hammers. The smith shoes horses, donkeys, mules and ponies. He does not make farm implements but he repairs them. Part of the forge work is done in the open air, such as shoeing wheels and the smith does this work beside a stream so as to be able to cool the irons.
