The breakfast was a great problem., All wanted the fire and the kettle and a place for a teapot at the same time, and when a woman would go to the dresser for the milk she had provided the night before, it wasn't there. The early bird, (or worm it must have been,) had been busy. They found the "white bread" very un-satisfying compared to the soda-cakes they had at home, for there were few facilities for baking, even if they succeeded in coaxing some buttermilk from a farmer's house in the neighbourhood.
