With great difficulty and after a considerable time the four men succeeded in getting the harness on the horse again, and got him hooked to the cart.
Then they started for Gilfillan's house and left the stone there. In a few days the stone was set in Gilfillan's hearth. And strange to say that chimney never drew smoke satisfactorily. This house changed hands or occupiers several times within the last twenty years. Each new-comer tried all means to improve the chimney to get rid of the smoke, but all to no avail.
The present occupier and owner Miss Mamie Farrelly before going to live there had the house renovated. Among some other changes that she has made, she got this stone removed and thrown outside the house. And again stranger still to say, the house is now free from smoke - the chimney without any other changes is drawing very satisfactorily. Further it is said - but I cannot vouch for the veracity of the following - it is said that the stone has mysteriously disappeared altogether from Miss Farrelly's house.
