    The wood for the rafters was got in the wood. The people had a lot of trouble getting it, for sometimes they had to go twenty or thirty miles to get it, buy it, and draw it home. Wood without cutting or sculping was used that time for rafters.
    There were no nails to tie the rafters down. This is how they did it:- They put a hole in a piece of wood with an "auger" or a "brace and bit" and a piece of straw was twisted, and a rope made of it. The rope was put through the hole and tied.
    A "screw" was put down on the rafters, and the thatch stuck on top with scollops made from the sally, black-
