known as "custom boxes" at each entrance to the town, the people who bought the stock have to pay duty at the rate of a penny or twopence per head. They have to pay a penny for sheep and pigs and twopence for horses and cattle.
Very often when two people are making bargains and they do not agree, a third man comes along and he says "split the difference" then one man spits on his hand and strikes the other man's hand as a sign that the bargain is made. Most sellers give a penny" which is nearly always more than a penny. If they get a very good price they give about ten shillings for luck.
The animals when they are bought are marked with a brand stick, sometimes cattle and pigs are marked with a scissors. This branch stick is called raddle. Each buyer get a diffferent colour.
