“All boots were made by the local shoemakers who used to go round from house to house.”
All boots were made by the local shoemakers who used to go round from house to house. They were made of strong leather and had large nails in the sole. They lasted usually for five years and were always made very large. A pair usually wore seven soles. They were tied with pieces of leather cut very thinly so as to fit the holes in the shoes.
They were called whang and were also made by the local shoemakers. Horse-hair from the tails or mane was sometimes used for tying them also.- Bailitheoir
