Fortunately for himself he did so for an hour after his departure a party of yeomen from Milford headed by Commander Buchanan raided the house looking for the Bishop.
They found the Bishop away and in their fury they seized the Parish Priest Father Hegarty instead and dragged him along roughly till they came to the rock near Milford.
There they cruelly shot him. This place is marked by a stone which has always been known as Father Hegarty's Rock.
