- The houses long ago were not like the houses we have nowadays. Most of the houses long ago had thatched roofs the thatch being got from straw. Some of the better class people had their roofs slated,. The houses contained one to two rooms. In the houses with only one room the bed was placed in the kitchen in a corner or along the wall. This bed was usually called a settle-bed. The fire was situated at the gable end of the house and the chimney was made or mortar and stones. The floor was made of flags which were kept together with earth or mortar. The windows were very small and had one pane of glass.
